Training Courses

We run training courses for people that want to learn bicycle maintenance and we also offer suspension servicing training at our workshop in Gateshead.

Our training courses fall into 3 categories:

  1. Wheel building courses
  2. Bike servicing and maintenance courses
  3. Suspension servicing and set up courses

Below is an outline of what you can expect from each course along with pricing and spaces available.

Wheel Building Courses

We are all experienced wheel builders at North East Cycleworks, having built thousands of wheels between us.

During this course you will learn the following:

  1. Rim construction methods
  2. Spoke types and their usefulness
  3. Nipple types and their usefulness
  4. Wheel design principles
  5. Measuring up for spoke lengths
  6. Lacing patterns (basic)
  7. How to build a wheel
  8. How to true a wheel

Together we will take a pile of spokes and nipples, a rim and a hub and turn that into a rideable, reliable wheel that will last you a long time.

We offer 2 options for this course:

  1. We supply you with all the parts to build your wheel – from £300
  2. You supply all parts for the wheel to build (with our guidance on spokes lengths etc) – £150

With the first option, us supplying all the parts, we can arrange discounts for you on the price of all parts as well as advice on the best things to get to serve the purpose that the wheel is being made for. We have trade accounts with all of the biggest suppliers of parts for wheel building and we can get you anything that you need. We have built wheels using the best parts on the planet and we’ve built wheels using the cheapest stuff around too, so we can help with whatever your requirements are.

We would say that because you’ll be under our watchful eye during the build you could choose decent parts for the build and we’ll make sure that you don’t damage anything as you learn.

If you bring your own parts it’s essential that you speak to us first. There are many factors that influence spoke lengths so we need to double check your order before you get parts to make sure that you will be able to complete the course successfully.

Expect this course to run from 0900 until around 1700 with a 30 minute lunch break and two 15 minute coffee breaks. We will have a student to instructor ratio of 2:1, so you will always have help and assistance easily available.

Bike Service and Maintenance Courses

North East Cycleworks is, first and foremost, a workshop. All we do, all day long is service and repair bikes. We work on any kind of bike that people bring through our doors, be it a road bike, a mountain bike or even a spinning bike, we’ve fixed them all and we do it to the highest possible standards using the best tools and techniques available. We are extremely well placed to teach you how to fix your bike.

Expect the course to last all day from 0900 until 1700 with 30 minutes for lunch and two 15 minute coffee breaks.

We will also be selling beginner toolsets that you can use on the course (if you confirm beforehand that you would like one) and take away with you so that you can work on your bike at home. These kits will be sold at 10% discount for our students. Kits start at £100 for enthusiast level tools and go up above £700 for shop quality tools.

Intermediate Level Bike Maintenance Course

This course is designed for those cyclists that are comfortable with the contents of the beginner course above.

During this course you will learn the following:

  1. How to inspect your frame for cracks and damage
  2. How to change your bottom bracket
  3. How to remove and install a headset
  4. How to set up tubeless tires
  5. How to true a wheel

We will also offer additional extras such as brake bleeding, if required, and we can swap this for another module as well, if this is more appropriate.

This course is suitable for mountain bikers, road cyclists, commuters and any other cyclists that want to increase their skills and ability to do their own maintenance.

This course is £200

Expect the course to last all day from 0900 until 1700 with a 30 minute lunch break and two 15 minute coffee breaks.

We will supply all of the example frames and wheels needed for this course. If you want to work on your own bike please let us know beforehand so that we can assess your bike and make sure that it will be suitable to learn the modules included in this class.

As with the beginner course we will be offering discounted tools and instruction books during this course. If you think you would be interested in getting a high quality tool set to use at home please let us know so we can run through some options with you.

Spaces for both courses will be limited to 6 attendees and you will have a student to teacher ratio of 3:1.

Suspension Servicing Courses

Suspension is a subject which North East Cycleworks really excels at. Through our sister company, Revalve Suspension, we offer the widest range of suspension servicing for miles.

We’re a Fox Authorised Service Centre, which means we’ve been trained and certified to work on Fox Suspension products.

We’re a Marzocchi Authorised Service Centre, which again means that we’ve been trained to work on Marzocchi suspension products.

We’ve also been trained to service Rock Shox Suspension, BOS Suspension, DVO Suspension, MRP Suspension, X Fusion Suspension and more.

It’s fair to say that we know what we’re talking about and we are offering to teach you.

  7. How to test that your shock is working properly
  8. How to set your particular shock up for you and your riding style

We will supply all seals, oils, cleaning products and lubricants needed to complete a full service on your fork and you will complete the service under the watchful eyes of our 2 very experienced suspension technicians.

This course will cost £250

Expect these courses to take at least 6 hours including breaks. We want to take our time with explaining things to you and we don’t want you to feel rushed so this is a good rough estimate for the average person.

Both of these courses are designed for those that want to learn how to service their expensive and delicate suspension in a safe environment under the supervision of experts. A good ability to understand fairly complex principles will be useful but not prior suspension knowledge is required. If we feel that you might damage your suspension due to lack of co-ordination or dexterity we may insist on helping you complete the service so as to save you from expensive damage.
